Can scientists fill the science journalism void?

Study shows public interest in science writing, when paired and compared with different media topics, is equal.
In this day and age of information, traditional journalism including science journalism has been negatively affected This loss has led others to believe that science writing in news media could lead to better public communication. However, many believe science writings would be overshadowed in the same outlet if paired with other topics such as politics and media. Yael Barel-Ben David of the Israel Institute of Technology along with two others ran a quantitative test on Israeli media outlets Mako and Ynet in which science writings were posted alongside the typical pieces. The data found that public engagement between science topics relative to the usual topics was rather similar, providing hope for the future of science communication.
